AITA for telling my birth siblings to fuck off and leave me alone and I don't care about their stupid fucking parents?

18 February 2025 @ 5:38 pm

I (20s, m) was adopted as an infant. Actually I was found in an alley and when my birth family didn't come forward to claim me and nobody knew who I was I was adopted. But I was an infant at the time thankfully so no long foster care experience. I was placed without anything to keep me warm, in a low-visibility area and there was no signs I was lovingly placed. It basically looked like I was thrown away like trash. I've seen some old newspaper clippings about it. The story was told to me gradually throughout my childhood. My parents were always open about my adoption though. I never felt othered. My family (parents, siblings and extended family) were my family even if I was the only non-bio kid in the family. I was loved, I was treasured even and I had a great life. But the circumstances surrounding my adoption meant some stuff was unclear. Medical history being the biggest thing. I never really cared. But I got engaged a few m

Stranger hit my child and I retaliated

18 February 2025 @ 5:07 pm

I'm female, 35, from England and have a five year old son. I was in a restaurant with my son last week and he dropped a toy near an older woman. She reacted angrily, shouted at him, and hit him hard in the back. I saw it happen, lost my temper, jumped up, shouted and swore at her and kicked at her. We then had a verbal row until the whole thing was broken up by security. The woman claims my son threw his toy at her. However, the CCTV clearly shows she lied about this. The police have contacted me and have said she doesn't want to press charges against me for the kick. However, they haven't taken any action against her. I'm wondering what to do next. Were I to press forward and take action against her for the assault on my son I assume she would also take action against me for my kick. I'm wondering what the likely consequences for her and me would be if this went ahead. I don't feel she should just get

Why is the salary discrepancy in the UK so gigantic?

18 February 2025 @ 3:53 pm

I recently moved from the US to the UK temporary due to my husbands work. As I am searching for jobs, I am so surprised about the pay difference between the UK and the US. For my career fiend in cybersecurity the difference is quite large. For a cybersec senior analyst in the UK the salary ranges from 35k-70k £ a yr. During my job search the one highest paying job I saw was 90k £, but it was only one job among dozens. In the US the average for a senior analyst is 70k-120k £. The highest one I saw was 150k. The lower end of the salary is the highest for the UK. Even for a junior position the salary here is almost offensive-25k a yr! How does anyone live making that? In the US the jr pay averages at least 50k. I feel kind of discouraged applying to these jobs because it seems like a rip off. Are there any companies that pay better than this? Or is this what I’m stuck with for the next few years of my life? Why is the discrepancy so b

How Phished Data Turns into Apple & Google Wallets

18 February 2025 @ 6:37 pm

Carding -- the underground business of stealing, selling and swiping stolen payment card data -- has long been the dominion of Russia-based hackers. Happily, the broad deployment of more secure chip-based payment cards in the United States has weakened the carding market. But a flurry of innovation from cybercrime groups in China is breathing new life into the carding industry, by turning phished card data into mobile wallets that can be used online and at main street stores.

Wired reported this week that a 19-year-old working for Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was given access to sensitive US government systems even though his past association with cybercrime communities should have precluded him from gaining the necessary security clearances to do so. As today's story explores, the DOGE teen is a former denizen of 'The Com,' an archipelago of Discord and Telegram chat channels that function as a kind of distributed cybercriminal social network for facilitating instant collaboration.

New mobile apps from the Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company DeepSeek have remained among the top three "free" downloads for Apple and Google devices since their debut on Jan. 25, 2025. Research published this week on one such outfit -- a sprawling network tied to Chinese organized crime gangs and aptly named "Funnull" -- highlights a persistent whac-a-mole problem facing cloud services.

A Tumultuous Week for Federal Cybersecurity Efforts

The president fired all advisors from the Department of Homeland Security's Cyber Safety Review Board, called for the creation of a strategic cryptocurrency reserve, and voided a Biden administration action that sought to reduce the risks that artificial intelligence poses to consumers, workers and national security.

MasterCard DNS Error Went Unnoticed for Years

22 January 2025 @ 3:24 pm

The payment card giant MasterCard just fixed a glaring error in its domain name server settings that could have allowed anyone to intercept or divert Internet traffic for the company by registering an unused domain name. The misconfiguration persisted for nearly five years until a security researcher spent $300 to register the domain and prevent it from being grabbed by cybercriminals.
